Light
Form & Order Making
The purpose of this project is to design a non-denominational chapel placed on the Farmingdale State College campus. The campus is requiring that the building is a place where all people of any religion can come and worship and reflect.
The campus feels like this type space can be accomplished by the use of light.Different techniques such as backlighting reflectors and light cannons can be used to control the entrance of light into a space. Curved walls are also used in the solution that creates unique light splashes and light patterns.
Light Background Research
Mount Angel Library
By: Alvar Aalto
My research for this project came from the Mount Angel Library in Kuortane, Finland. This library was designed by Alvar Aalto and was completed in 1970.
Alvar Aalto uses the use of skylights. The skylights are angled so that the light does not directly hit the floor but instead bounces off columns and beams to make the light reflect. As well clerestory windows on the north side of the library
As you can see in the section of the library to the right that the main roof skylights is on the angle but Alvar Aalto also uses the use of regular skylights as well. This section shows the use of many types of angles and light reflecting methods.
